Precision medicine, sometimes known as "personalized medicine", is an approach to tailoring disease prevention and treatment that takes into account differences in people's genes, environments, and lifestyles. The goal of precision medicine is to target the right treatments to the right patients at the right time.
In contrast to the treatments that breast cancer patients receive today - that are tailored to their type of cancer - breast cancer patients are most often provided with overly general education and information materials that may or may not fit their diagnosis or lifestyle. The result is that patients and caregivers feel lost, confused, distressed by the excess or lack of information and the inability to manage it, which affects the way they approach treatment and its results. Patient’s understanding of their illness not only affects their ability to advocate for themselves and make informed decisions about their treatment options; but also affects their adherence to treatment, therefore their health outcomes.
Onconecta is a digital platform designed to provide evidence-based, personalized information for each specific type of breast cancer and stage, in Spanish, so every patient can take an active, responsive and effective role in making decisions about their treatment.
Dr Cabanes is a co-founder of Onconecta, together with Dr Cynthia Villarreal and Mtr. Alejandra Platas.
