In high-income settings, recommendations and clinical practice guidelines such as those developed by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), have helped provide the best evidence-based care for breast cancer patients. These recommendations, though, have limited applicability to low-resource settings due to scarcities in health service resources, including shortages of trained healthcare workforce, and poor infrastructure.

The Uganda Cancer Institute, working in collaboration with the Breast health Global Initiative and a multidisciplinary group of experts, is developing Ugandan Breast Health Guidelines, appropriate to the country’s context, based on adapting evidence-based guidelines such as the NCCN’s harmonized guidelines as a starting point. Dr Cabanes chairs the Primary Care & Referral Pathway Scientific Advisory Committee.
